A high-profile power couple accustomed to an ultra-lavish lifestyle made a dramatic return to the dock this afternoon as a massive fraud, forgery, and identity theft investigation detonated inside the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court.

The dramatic courtroom proceedings saw three out of four accused individuals in the high-stakes fraud case against Vusi “Vusimuzi” Matlala officially granted release on a cash bail of 20,000 rand each.

Standing side by side before the bench, Vusi “Vusimuzi” Matlala, his wife Zakhona “Takani” Matlala, Claudette Mosete, and Given Makuafane faced a barrage of criminal charges, including fraud, forgery, uttering, and formal contraventions of the Identification Act.

The entire state docket stems from a fraudulent lease agreement the four co-accused acquired to secure a sprawling, high-end luxury property for the Matlala family.

Formally outlining the criminal scheme, the prosecution revealed that Vusi “Vusimuzi” Matlala utilized a fake Eswatini identity card under the alias Vusi Dlamini to obtain the property lease.

The state revealed that Vusi “Vusimuzi” Matlala went as far as purporting to be a direct member of the Eswatini royal family to convince the estate agent that the couple possessed the financial stature to afford the astronomical lease.

Simultaneously, Zakhona “Takani” Matlala stole and utilized the official identity documents belonging to accused number two, Claudette Mosete, handing the stolen credentials directly to the unsuspecting estate agent.

To complete the intricate financial illusion, fourth accused Given Makuafane secured legitimate payslips directly from unsuspecting employees, passing them to the couple to fraudulently guarantee approval for the mansion.

The target of the elaborate scam was an expansive, high-security mansion located in the elite suburb of Waterkloof, Pretoria, carrying an eye-watering monthly rental price tag of 95,000 rand.

Investigative details confirmed that the couple paid an initial up-front cash lump sum of 1 million rand to secure the Waterkloof property before agreeing to the 95,000 rand monthly payouts.

Though the couple operated the fraudulent Waterkloof lease since January 2025, they subsequently canceled the agreement earlier this year, resulting in Zakhona “Takani” Matlala relocating to Fourways.

The sophisticated criminal enterprise unravelled after long-term law enforcement investigations and digital extractions targeted the couple following their previous high-profile arrests in a separate attempted murder case involving Bongani Bongo and Makhosini Nkosi.

During prior bail hearings held at the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court last year, state prosecutors exposed intercepted text messages retrieved from seized cellphones, proving Vusi “Vusimuzi” Matlala explicitly instructed Zakhona “Takani” Matlala to send him the fraudulent Eswatini identity card.

Following the unearthing of the digital paper trail, the aggrieved estate agent formally lodged criminal complaints, allowing law enforcement to dismantle the couple’s network.

Outside the courtroom, SABC news reporter Neria Kakuza broke down the dramatic courtroom details alongside studio anchor Tshilidzi Marwala, highlighting how state agencies systematically tracked the couple’s digital footprint.

Following the official bail rulings, Zakhona “Takani” Matlala, Claudette Mosete, and Given Makuafane were ordered to return to the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on October 29.

However, Vusi “Vusimuzi” Matlala was remanded in custody and ordered to appear in court on October 14 for his separate, formal bail application.

As the October court dates approach, the state continues to process evidence against Vusi “Vusimuzi” Matlala and his co-accused, ensuring all four face full judicial accountability for the Waterkloof mansion scheme.
