Gauteng Department of Education cracks down on illegal independent schools
A high-stakes warning sounds across the education landscape as authorities uncover an alarming reality facing parents seeking schooling for their children.

The Gauteng Education Department issued an urgent directive commanding parents to look far beyond school gates before entrusting their children to any independent academic institution.
Officials are urging families to verify that chosen schools are fully registered and operating within the exact boundaries of the law.
Parents hold a vital responsibility to inspect a school’s official registration documents before paying a single cent in tuition fees.
The Gauteng Education Department instructs citizens to contact government offices immediately if they suspect an institution is operating outside legal boundaries.
Verifying a school’s credentials prior to enrollment prevents the devastating discovery years down the line that an institution was completely unregistered.
Member of the Executive Council Matome Chiloane confirmed that the province currently houses 1,083 fully registered independent schools.
This number represents a dramatic surge of more than 100 registered independent institutions over the past five years.
MEC Matome Chiloane stated that the private education sector plays a critical role in relieving immense pressure on public schools.
The public education system currently serves more than 2.4 million learners across the region.
The public sector relies on at least 71,000 educators to manage the massive student population.
The independent schooling sector absorbs over 370,000 learners, highlighting a massive gap between public capacity and student demand.
MEC Matome Chiloane emphasized that there is no need to worry because independent schools prevent complete system collapse.
If the 370,000 independent learners flooded into the public sector, the 2.4 million-capacity public schools would face severe shortages of classroom space and basic equipment like furniture.
MEC Matome Chiloane revealed that the department allocated a massive 1.13 billion rand to subsidize independent schools during the current financial year.
This funding allocation represents approximately two percent of the education department’s total overall budget.
Out of the 1,083 registered institutions, 279 independent schools receive direct government subsidies.
A total of 804 independent schools operate completely non-subsidized without state financial support.
A subsidized school remains privately owned and managed while qualifying for state financial backing toward educational delivery.
A non-subsidized school receives zero operating cash from the government and relies entirely on private tuition fees and outside income.
The Gauteng Education Department declared that all subsidized schools must undergo strict financial oversight.
Institutions must submit fully audited financial statements before government funding is released into their accounts.
The department is moving to standardize monitoring processes to enforce strict accountability across the entire independent schooling sector.
Reporting for SABC News in Johannesburg, Calvin Mabasa confirmed that regulatory enforcement will continue tightening around non-compliant institutions.
