Secret apartment meeting unravels as key witness drops explosive bribery claims and arrest sabotage charges

A high-stakes confrontation escalated dramatically during official proceedings as key witness Matlala was pushed to the brink over explosive bribery allegations, covert cash middleman operations, and claims of high-level police sabotage.
Under relentless cross-examination by legal representatives including Advocate Hassim, the witness was forced to address damning recorded statements made by General Mkhwanazi.
The inquiry zeroed in on secret discussions regarding General Cibia and allegations surrounding systematic illegal money collection schemes.
Official records revealed that General Mkhwanazi previously disclosed that Matlala provided him with the precise home address of Steve Matsumi while detailing how General Cibia was collecting illicit cash payoffs.
When challenged directly on whether Steve Matsumi was making direct payments to General Cibia, Matlala initially attempted to dodge the line of questioning.
The witness repeatedly asserted that answering specific details about the financial transactions would severely prejudice his pending criminal trial.
Matlala claimed that his ongoing attempted murder case was directly linked to a setup that originated during a covert meeting inside the private apartment of General Mkhwanazi.
The witness insisted that revealing his entire defense strategy before the commission would strip him naked before he could challenge his arrest in court.
Commissioners firmly rejected the witness’s attempt to claim self-incrimination, pointing out that named third parties, not Matlala himself, were the ones accused of making the illicit payments.
Under mounting pressure from the panel, Matlala altered his testimony and admitted that he did not possess direct personal knowledge of Steve Matsumi paying General Cibia.
The line of inquiry then shifted to how Matlala knew that General Cibia was receiving illicit cash from other individuals.
Matlala eventually exposed the existence of an insider middleman network operating between high-ranking figures.
The witness identified Sergeant Nkhosi as the direct middleman and conduit who actively carried and delivered illicit cash payments intended for General Cibia.
While Matlala claimed he did not know the ultimate identities of the primary sources funding the conduit, he maintained that the information was relayed to him directly by Sergeant Nkhosi.
The panel then confronted Matlala with contradicting statements regarding the origin of his attempted murder charge and an outstanding arrest warrant.
According to previous testimony delivered to an ad hoc committee by General Mkhwanazi, it was Matlala who actively brought up a contract dispute and inquired about a Gauteng police investigation into the attempted murder of his ex-girlfriend.
General Mkhwanazi had documented that Matlala asked him to intervene with General Nkhuwa over stalled police contract orders before bringing up the domestic violence investigation.
Matlala vehemently denied the account, claiming that General Mkhwanazi was the one who raised the arrest warrant during their private apartment meeting.
The witness stated that General Mkhwanazi misidentified the victim as an actress from Limpopo rather than her actual background in Mpumalanga.
Matlala further revealed that General Mkhwanazi informed him that the arrest warrant had only been signed by a prosecutor and was awaiting a magistrate’s signature.
The witness maintained that someone subsequently leaked details of their private conversation, causing the warrant to be finalized and leading directly to his arrest.
Legal representatives noted that General Mkhwanazi had secretly recorded the entire interaction between himself and Matlala inside the apartment, providing an unalterable audio record of the high-level exchanges.
